The Department of General Biology and Aquatic Bioresources was founded in 1928 by Prof. T.O. Svirenko on the basis of the Department of Botany at the Dnipropetrovsk Institute of Public Education and the Dnipropetrovsk Hydrobiological Station (later – the Research Institute of Hydrobiology, now – the Research Institute of Biology of DNU).

One of the main tasks of the Department is to develop students' skills of independent work both during their studies and in the process of practical training. Practical training of students of the Department of General Biology and Aquatic Bioresources is provided by:

• first, the passage of students' long educational, industrial and research practices not only in the Research Institute of Biology of Oles Honchar Dnipro National University, and leading research institutions of Ukraine and in production (Institute of Fisheries of NAAS, Institute of Hydrobiology of NASU, aquaculture and fisheries, medical and educational institutions);

• secondly, the involvement of students in research activities of the Department, the results of which are reflected in the diploma, course and competition papers of students.

Execution of term papers, dissertations and internships is carried out in the conditions of maximum approximation to the profile of future work of a bachelor or master.

Training of graduates at the Department of General Biology and Aquatic Bioresources is aimed at ensuring their creative, productive work in enterprises in the field of biology, laboratory medicine, production and quality control of biological products, protection and rational use of natural and artificial water bodies, improving hydrobioresources and hydrochemistry . Trained specialists can work in primary positions:

• Biologist and professional of related professions (histologist, embryologist, cytologist, parasitologist, geneticist, radiobiologist, radioecologist, hydrobiologist, hydrochemist, ichthyologist, ichthyopathologist, fish farmer, etc.);

• Biologist-researcher, ichthyologist-researcher, fish farmer-researcher, aquaculture researcher;

• Researcher-consultant (biology), researcher (biology);

• Specialist in biology and medicine;

• Biotechnologist – a specialist in the cultivation and use of aquatic bioresources;

• Professional in water management, zooengineering, bio-amelioration and nature reserve;

• Fishery professional, specialist in the use of aquatic bioresources;

• Specialist in the production of aquaculture products.

Graduates of the Department who studied for the OQR master's degree are awarded the qualification of biologist.
