German Universities Supporting the Academic and Scientific Development of DNU

The conference dedicated to fostering cooperation between North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) and Ukraine, held in Cologne, further strengthened horizontal ties between leaders of industrial enterprises, medical institutions, educational organizations, cultural institutions, and public organizations from the Dnipro region and their counterparts in NRW.

The panel discussion titled “Ukraine-North Rhine-Westphalia-EU: Opportunities for International Funding in Science and Research”, featuring DNU Rector Professor Sergiy Okovytyy and DigiLabStars Project Coordinator at Ruhr University Bochum, Iryna Kompanets, highlighted collaborative efforts between DNU and its German partners.

Ruhr-Universität Bochum was represented by a prominent delegation led by Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs, Professor Cornelia Freitag. Recently, the Alliance of Ruhr Universities, spearheaded by Ruhr-Universität Bochum, introduced the DniPRONrw project, which aims to develop a platform providing Ukrainian scholars and students access to educational content created by German colleagues in Ukrainian and English.

During the conference on November 18, NRW Minister Ina Brandes announced funding of €100,000 for the project, starting in 2025. Ukrainian educators will gain access to digital courses offered by UA Ruhr partner universities, and Ukrainian students will be able to integrate these courses into their study programs as electives.

German partners also offer training and learning opportunities to address the educational gaps caused by the war, thereby supporting Ukrainian university faculty.

During his visit to the Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule Aachen (RWTH Aachen University), DNU Rector Sergiy Okovytyy met with University Chancellor Manfred Nettekoven, Vice-Rector for International Relations Dr. Ute Gabel, and Professor of Radar Systems Engineering Peter Knott. RWTH Aachen, a leading polytechnic university, conducts research in areas closely aligned with the scientific interests of DNU scholars.

German colleagues expressed interest in DNU’s collaborative experiences through the DAAD and ERASMUS+ programs in academic mobility and infrastructure projects. Rector Okovytyy presented proposals from DNU faculty teams for joint research initiatives and participation in professionally oriented educational activities for students.

Key areas for cooperation and exchange (including online) include:

Food Biotechnology: Food safety, energy-efficient food production, technologies to enhance food quality and nutrient preservation, and sustainable food processing methods.

Chemical Technologies: Polymer composite material properties, polymer waste management, polymer production chemistry, chemical engineering, and related fields.

Radio Electronics and Engineering: Joint research and exchange opportunities in advanced radio and engineering technologies.

These collaborations represent a significant opportunity to bridge academic gaps and strengthen international partnerships between DNU and German universities.
