Cooperation between Scientists from Ukraine and the United States: Citizen Diplomacy in Action

On March 7, the team of Oles Honchar Dnipro National University held a video conference with representatives of North Dakota State University (Fargo, North Dakota, USA), where cooperation between the institutions was discussed for the conclusion of an official Memorandum.

The Zoom meeting with a group of scientists from the United States at the DNU was organized with the assistance of the regional authorities. The Dnipropetrovsk Regional Military Administration was represented by the Deputy Head of the Dnipro Oblast Military Administration Iryna Hrytsai and the Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Science Anton Demura.

Opening the international video conference, Iryna Hrytsai first thanked her American colleagues for developing the partnership and for this online meeting, which became a certain signal of support for Ukraine in the world.

This video meeting is not the first contact between scientists from DNU and the University of North Dakota. In particular, the rector Sergiy Okovytyy and the head of the presented scientific group of North Dakota State University, Professor Bakhtiyor Rasulev, are united by more than 20 years of acquaintance and cooperation at Jackson State University (Jackson, Mississippi, USA).

Currently, Professor Rasulev is leading the scientific work of a group of postgraduate students at the University of North Dakota in the specialties of Biomedical Sciences (biology, toxicology), Materials and nanomaterials, Coatings and polymeric materials. In these scientific areas, DNU has powerful scientific schools, so our university can implement joint training of doctors of philosophy.

The communication of Ukrainian and American colleagues was dedicated to establishing interaction in the educational, scientific and cultural spheres. Both sides are particularly interested in such cooperation, as they have many points of contact - in chemistry, biology, ecology and materials science. All key areas of partnership - future joint research projects, educational programs (for example, double degree programs in master's or postgraduate studies), cultural exchange and development of the English language in Ukraine – will soon be defined in an official Memorandum. Partnership consultations are currently underway to develop specific projects, because our universities want the Memorandum to become not just a formality, but the basis for real initiatives that are useful for students and scientists.

One of the options for effective inter-university interaction is also considered cooperation between scientific groups. Thus, our scientists can provide American researchers with valuable samples (for example, contaminated with explosives) that are formed on land and in water as a result of war. And American colleagues, for their part, can provide the latest equipment that will help to make important steps in scientific research.

Actually, the acting vice-rector for scientific and pedagogical work in the field of international cooperation, Viktor Gasso, told the American guests in detail about the multifaceted ways of interaction with the classic Oles Honchar Dnipro National University. Victor emphasized that our university, which has a glorious history in the humanities, engineering and natural sciences, can offer the University of North Dakota interesting areas for cooperation and development of joint initiatives.
